Charles Hannaford (24), from Bexley in South East London, is taking on the epic 17,000 mile journey around the world.
His journey started at Trafalgar Square on 1st April, from where he cycled to France, (and at the time of writing) he is currently on his way through Istanbul, to Turkey.
He will continue on his epic journey through Europe to China. From there, Charles will cycle through Australia and New Zealand, before tackling the terrain of Canada and the United States of America.
The last leg of Charles’ journey will see him travel through Morocco and Spain, before he heads back through France to the finishing line at Trafalgar Square.
Novice cyclist Charles chose to support Meningitis Now because a close family friend of his, Vanessa Whiting, is one of the charity’s volunteer Community Ambassadors.
Charles said: “Vanessa lost her son Luke to meningitis at a very young age. I have known Vanessa for a long time, and for years she has fundraised and campaigned for the charity. So when I had the opportunity to give back, it was a no brainer.”
He aims to raise £10,000 through his inspiring and ambitious adventure. He said: “I’m not asking for people to open their wallets wide, just a little. The ideal donations are between £5 - £10.
“If you can spare more that’s fantastic! Please help to give me some encouragement by making a donation to these vital and extremely valuable causes.”
You can donate via Charles’ Virgin Money Giving page here. So far he has raised 39% of his total goal.
Leah Wynn, Community Fundraiser for Meningitis Now said: “Charles is taking on a mammoth task and we wish him all the best. Nine months of cycling is a real commitment and we are proud to be associated with Charles and his fundraising efforts.”
Mark Beaumont, round the world cycling record holder said: “I applaud the tenacity and ambition of Charles Hannaford and know that he will live and share an inspiring journey. I encourage everyone to share and support!”
Charles will be documenting the progress and punctures of his journey around the world on his website The Novice Explorer.
