The Fabulous Virtual Walk will replace our flagship Five Valleys Walk - which has always been a celebration of our Gloucestershire roots - for the second year running. With Covid-19 still casting its shadow, it seems unwise to encourage large group events until we know they can be staged confidently and safely.
But the plus side of this is that it means you can do your Fabulous Virtual Walk your way, wherever you are in the country – and you don’t have to struggle up some of those energy-sapping Stroud hills (unless you want to).
Taking part in the Fabulous Virtual Walk is easy – just visit our FVW page to sign up. Registration for the event costs £21 and everyone who registers will receive a handbook, which includes suggested walks across the UK, a fun kids’ activity sheet and a Meningitis Now t-shirt. Additional t-shirts are available to buy if required.
Spirit of the Five Valleys Walk
Our Fundraising Officer Leah Wynn said: “Our Fabulous Virtual Walk captures the spirit of the Five Valleys Walk, if not the location.
“It gives everybody from all over the country the chance to be a part of a bigger event, have an enjoyable experience and gain a sense of achievement – knowing you’re making a difference in our fight to beat meningitis within a generation.”
We’re asking those who register to walk 21 miles – the distance of our Five Valleys route – during September, either as one walk or a series of shorter ones spread over the month. You can take on your favourite walk or a new long-distance challenge that you’ve always wanted to try.
Raise at least £50
Although there’s no minimum sponsorship pledge for those taking part we’re suggesting everyone aims to raise at least £50. And to tempt you, whoever raises the most in sponsorship this year, will win a delicious box of Hetty’s Kitchen brownies – yum!
“The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on our fundraising over the last 18 months so we’re hoping lots of people will join us and raise as much as you can to enable us to be there for all those who need us,” Leah added. “With around 21 people a day contracting meningitis there’s still a great demand for our lifesaving and life-changing services.”
Our hope is that lots of local supporters in Gloucestershire, who normally take part in the Five Valleys Walk every September, will take on a Fabulous Virtual Walk and demonstrate their support for us.
And that supporters from further afield, who might not have been able to join us in Stroud previously, will now also have the opportunity to be fully engaged too.
“Do join us if you can and please raise as much as you can,” Leah added. “Every step will make a difference as we continue to reach out to all those who need our help and support.
“And hopefully next year we’ll be able to meet up again in and around Stroud in September for the 34th walking of our flagship Five Valleys Walk.”
