The February walk will start at the rival club’s ground and has been organised and will be led by Jamie Dodd, whose brother Sam lost his life to meningitis aged just three years in 1998.
As Jamie was only seven at the time of his brother’s death he said he doesn’t remember much about it. But he said he did know that it “spread so fast, from waking up that morning to losing his life at 7.30pm that evening.
“I find it hard to talk about it all, so I keep my feelings to myself,” he said. “But this year since it’s been 20 years since he passed I wanted to do something in his memory.”
Jamie will be joined on the sponsored event by ten of his friends and family members – who have already started their training for the event with regular walks. As all the group are Bradford City fans and season ticket holders they thought it would be a good idea to walk from an opposition’s ground back to the stadium in time for the start of a match.
“I chose Fleetwood which means we will have to walk roughly 70 miles over two and a half days,” said Jamie. We start the walk on Thursday morning from Fleetwood Town FC and walk 30 miles to Blackburn, then on the Friday we leave Blackburn and walk another 30 miles to Halifax. On Saturday morning we have a shorter trip of roughly nine miles from Halifax to Bradford City, arriving in time for the match to kick off at 3pm”. He added that they had support from their home team to walk right on to the pitch before kick-off.
Jamie said that the group had managed to get a good deal with Premier Inn so would be staying at hotels at the end of each day’s walk. As well as Jamie, the other walkers taking part are: Karl Emmett, Jason Emmett, Luke Holden, James Metcalfe, Paul Dignam, Aaron Peel, Liam Stewart, Phil Marson, Max Pemberton and Paul Crowther.
Good luck guys – do Sam proud!
