The self-confessed ‘two fat ginger blokes’ - Jason Bennett, 40, of Newark and Simon Clark, 38, from Market Rasen - are taking on the challenge of Trek Fest on Saturday 2 September for us.
They have been inspired to step out by the story of their friends’ daughter Flora, who contracted pneumococcal meningitis two years ago. Thankfully Flora recovered from the disease but it was a distressing time for all the family.
Put on life support
Flora’s mum, Jo Brown, of Lincoln, said: “It only took a few hours for Flora to go from a healthy eight-week-old girl to being revived at Lincoln Hospital and put on a life support machine as she didn’t have the strength to breathe on her own.”
Flora was transferred to intensive care in Nottingham and for three days the family waited to see what would happen.
“Flora defied the odds and woke up,” Jo added. “We stayed in hospital for another two weeks and had the best day when we were able to bring her home so she could boss her sister Hallie around.”
Bundle of energy
“She is now just such a bundle of energy and has such an infectious zest for life.”
Throughout their ordeal we supported the family and will continue to do so as Flora grows up.
“You never think it will happen to you, but it did and changed our whole outlook on life,” Jo added. “Meningitis Now gave us the most amazing support.”
“Please support Jason and Simon’s challenge – it will make a massive difference.”
Jason added: “We are basically two fat ginger blokes, so at the very least please donate because you pity us!”
You can support them through their fundraising page.
