A new book aims to provide a practical guide to sepsis and meningitis claims

A guide to meningitis

The book, written by barrister Isaac Hogarth and published by Law Brief Publishing, gives an overview of the pathophysiology of infection, sepsis and meningitis and provides a legal practitioners’ guide and analysis of relevant case law.

It is aimed more at the legal profession than members of the public but does give a helpful overview of signs, symptoms, treatment and outcomes, as well as useful glossaries of terms. It explores issues on breach and causation that often arise, and will provide practical guidance for practitioners, including looking at expert and non-expert evidence, damages and real examples from reported cases.

The author, a barrister at 12 King’s Bench Walk, specialising in clinical negligence and personal injury law, has a special interest in meningitis.

His experience includes appearing for bereaved families at inquests and has given seminars on meningitis claims, but he also has a close family experience.

“It is a subject close to my heart”, he told Meningitis Now. “My son contracted enterovirus meningitis at the age of four days. Thankfully, he has made a good recovery.

“I know how frightening it is for a family to be facing meningitis and how important charities such as Meningitis Now are.”
