All aboard the Tangerine Train for May Mayhem!

22nd May 2017

Great Western Railway (GWR) is turning their trains tangerine for the day along their Cheltenham to London Paddington line; to raise money for Gloucestershire based charity Meningitis Now!

On Friday 26 May all GWR staff working along the route including; drivers, guards, cleaners, station staff and managers, will be asked to wear an orange accessory and make a £1 donation.

As part of the event the ‘Meningitis Trust’ power car will be in service and running along the South Cotswold line starting from Cheltenham at 8:31am, and then heading to London Paddington to arrive at 10.45am.

In addition to this, GWR are offering two money-can’t-buy prizes! The first is a train simulator drive in Bristol, where the winner will get to experience what it is like to actually drive a High Speed Train. The second is a cab ride in a High Speed Train (HST) from Cheltenham Spa to London Paddington. These once in a lifetime prizes have kindly been donated by Ted Llewellyn driver manager for the Gloucester Depot.

Sophie Taft, GWR Customer Ambassador for the South Cotswolds, said: “We wanted to show our support to Meningitis Now by dedicating a whole day to fundraising."

"We really want to raise awareness of the great work the charity does, and this is reflected by our raffle donations - these really are once in a lifetime prizes that money-can’t-buy!”

On the day there will be volunteers from Meningitis Now stationed at every stop along the route; Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester, Stroud, Kemble, Swindon, Didcot Parkway, Reading and London Paddington. They will be raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of meningitis, whilst also collecting donations from the general public.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase a £2 orange wristband, for people to help turn the train tangerine and raise money and awareness for Meningitis Now.

Young Ambassadors who have been affected by Meningitis and have life changing stories to share, will also be joining volunteers at their local stations to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of meningitis, and the vaccines available, which can help to protect against the disease.

Harry Gardner Corporate Account Executive for Meningitis Now said: “We are so excited that GWR have chosen to support us this year!"

"We would like to say a big thank you to Ted Llewellyn for the amazing raffle prizes, and all the staff at GWR for getting on board and giving us this platform to raise awareness!”
