The Fund has awarded 7-year-old Olivia, from Carlisle, with a Lenovo Ideapad – equipment especially recommended for people with hearing impairments and providing good sound quality to maximise Olivia’s health, wellbeing and learning opportunities.
Olivia became ill with bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in June 2016, when she was just 2. Fortunately, she survived but the disease left her hearing impaired in both ears, wearing hearing aids and in difficulty accessing some sounds
Mum Emma said: “Olivia did not have access to a computer at home and had been using our mobile phones.
“However, the sound quality was poor and the screen too small, which caused her upset, even though she still tried her hardest.
Could have fallen behind
“We were concerned that Olivia may not reach her full academic potential and could fall behind in her schoolwork, having no access to the same resources at home as her peers.
“It was wonderful to be able to provide Olivia with a computer station within her home, equipped with everything it takes for her to hear and process the information she is given in class in a comfortable set up at home.”
Emma added: “Olivia is a high achieving, enthusiastic and driven little girl who strives to succeed in all areas of her schooling. She is a wonderfully spirited, loving, bright and good-natured little girl.
“And now, thanks to the support from Meningitis Now and the award of the Lenovo Ideapad she is engaging and enthusiastic in her learning and showing a tenacity and will to succeed beyond her young years.
“We would all like to say a big thank you to you all at Meningitis Now for Olivia’s new computer. She is very happy and has been using it for all her schoolwork. We are very grateful.”
And, in a card kindly sent to the charity following the award, Olivia added her own thank you: “I have been watching the Magic Key stories,” she wrote. “Thank you so much. Thank you, I have so much fun on it. Thank you so much, thank you very, very, very, very, very, very, VERY much! Love, Olivia.”
So glad to help
Meningitis Now’s Helpline and Information Manager Claire Donovan said: “We’re so glad that our Rebuilding Futures Fund has been able to help Olivia with this equipment to support her with her schoolwork and communication needs, and hope it continues to serve her well into the future.
“We know meningitis can have a devastating impact on many aspects of life and affect people’s ability to engage in some of the things most people take for granted.
“That’s where our Rebuilding Futures Fund can make such a difference by providing a practical solution that works, bringing opportunity and reducing stress and anxiety.
“We’re proud to provide this unique, life-changing support – the only meningitis organisation to do so in the UK.”
