The five-man team has already completed the Three Peaks Challenge in 2018 and now will be making their ascent of the famous Tanzanian mountain in June next year.

Paul Revill, who works for Bakers of Danbury, said fundraising was well underway and had included a quiz night and karting event. He added that they were also planning to arrange a paintball event around Christmas time.

“We wanted to raise money for Meningitis Now because one of our team, Nick Green, had meningitis as a child and so we all know the sort of impact this disease can have,” he said.

“Nick’s family are apparently over the moon that we have chosen Meningitis Now as our charity."

“Although we have already started raising funds, our main challenge will be to climb Kilimanjaro in June 2020."

Blistering heat and freezing cold

“Our tour guide will be Zara Tours and we will be climbing the Machame route over six days, a route that will take us through both the blistering heat and freezing cold, in dense rain forests and extremely thin air, climbing for us to ten hours a day and sleeping in basic tents on the mountains edge."

“It’s definitely going to be quite a challenge!”

He said that the group had also arranged a tree planting project, where they would help plant some trees with local villagers. And after their climb, they have arranged a two-day safari as “we could not travel all that way and not see the amazing sights!”

As well as Paul and Nick, the other members of the team are Jamie Dumbleton, Greg Sozstak (below) and Mick Lee and according to Paul, all four will be training “extremely hard” over the next year to prepare for the climb.

Matt Stephenson, Meningitis Now's Corporate Fundraiser, said, “The efforts of the team are certainly inspirational."

“We’re really grateful for everything they are doing and their commitment to raise money for Meningitis Now. I hope everything goes well with the training for the big climb – and that they all reach the summit safely! I look forward to hearing about it when they get back”.
