Michelle, from Bristol, will be appearing in the new series of ‘Too ugly for love?’, screening on the TLC channel at 9pm this evening (Wednesday 13 January).
Two-and-a-half-years ago Michelle almost died from meningitis. She lost a fifth of the skin on her legs and eight of her toes to the disease. You can read her story on our website here
She now enjoys a happy and busy life with her daughter Kira and is determined to stay positive and get on with her life. Dating is part of building up her confidence and raising awareness of meningitis and funds to help us fight the disease, by taking part in a skydive, for example, are also part of this process.
“Knowing how close I came to death has made me value life more than ever.”
Taking part in the tv programme ‘Too ugly for love?’, which follows individuals looking for love whilst dealing with their medical conditions, continues this process. It tracks people from the very first meeting through to the point at which they bravely decide to reveal their secret and beyond.
“I’d love to meet someone special, remarry and have more children, but my condition has left me quite self-conscious about having a physical relationship."
“I’m scared that even if I tell somebody about the skin on my legs and feet, when it comes down to it, they’d be put off. If someone complimented me I probably wouldn’t believe them anyway.”
But going on dates is starting to build up Michelle’s confidence and she hasn’t suffered any negative reactions. In many ways she is happier and more positive than ever, and a partner would be the icing on the cake
Good luck on your quest Michelle – your positive outlook is an inspiration to us all.
