James, from Bedfordshire, was 8 years old when he became seriously unwell with bacterial meningitis on a family holiday in Turkey
Thankfully, he made a full recovery, and wants to help raise money to help fund research and support other affected families.
All he needs to do is drive over 10,000 miles…
James says, “In July 2021, myself and my friend Freddie are taking part in the Mongol Rally. It’s an event that takes place across 22 counties and takes 8 weeks, which involves driving from England to Mongolia. The premise is, you can't buy a car worth more than £1,000 and it has to be the smallest engine size possible. To do this event you need a charity that you would like to raise money for, and due to my past history with meningitis I’ve chosen Meningitis Now.”
Ambitious target
In previous years, participants in the rally have raised over £50,000 for their chosen charities with the help of corporate sponsors, and James is hopeful that they can hit the same ambitious target.
“The reason I want to do this is to show people who have had this illness that you can live a normal life afterwards. It took a long while for me to get back to normality, especially being a child, but I hope I can inspire children who are facing the same problems I once faced.
“I want to help inspire not just children but anyone with the disease who is currently battling it or recently had it that life will be okay.”
