Publishing prize created in memory of son

12th October 2015

Budding authors are being offered the chance to win a top publishing package worth up to £2,000, while helping to raise cash for us

Publishing prize
The prize is being offered in memory of Bishopbriggs youngster Calum Macleod and to coincide with what would have been his 21st birthday in December this year. He died of meningitis in 2007, at the age of 12.

Calum’s parents, Sinclair and Kim Macleod – both published authors themselves – wanted to mark the occasion while at the same time raising funds for us as a charity close to their hearts.

“Calum’s death shook our family to the very core, but from those tragic days some light emerged. Sinclair decided that life was too short to put off doing what he really loved – writing."

“His first book, The Reluctant Detective, was published in September 2010 and set in motion a whole journey to eight other books and created our accidental business, Indie Authors World, helping others achieve their dream of publishing their books."

Marking a special birthday

“Calum would have been 21 years old on 8th December, 2015, and to mark his special birthday and create a lasting legacy, we have created the Calum Macleod Memorial Publishing Prize."

“The prize gives the winning author a top publishing package worth up to £2,000, which consists of full editing, cover design and interior layout for both a print and ebook for either a fiction or nonfiction book.”

Sinclair explained the importance of using the occasion to help the charity.

“Meningitis Now has supported us as a family and provided a way to channel our grief into raising awareness and supporting others who have been affected by this devastating disease. Proceeds from the competition will be donated to Meningitis Now.”

The prize will be presented at the Wonderful Life Gala Ball in Bishopbriggs on 10th December, 2015, arranged to celebrate and remember Calum.

Proud that Calum inspired others

“We are very proud that Calum inspired others around him and we hope this prize will inspire writers to see that publishing a book is possible. Indie Authors World would not exist had Calum not died, and this is our way to help others and at the same time keep Calum‘s memory alive. It seems a very fitting tribute.”
