Take on the Virtual London Marathon for Meningitis Now

Andy Hopkinson | 11th June 2021

The 2021 Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon is every bit as good in the long run as its well-known and well-established capital city counterpart. It even has several significant advantages

Take on Virtual London Marathon for Meningitis Now like Amy

One is that you can choose a course to suit yourself – yes, you can do the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon anywhere! The route is up to you. No need to catch that really early train, or pay for overnight accommodation. Maybe avoid too many hills too!

And with 24 hours up until midnight on Sunday 3 October to complete the 26.2 miles you can break it down to several stages, with a breather in between should you need one.

What’s more, by taking on the Virtual London Marathon you could find yourself a Guinness World Record holder, as one of 100,000 runners taking on a marathon that day – 50,000 on the streets of London and 50,000 virtual runners.

Wouldn’t have missed it for the world

Our supporter Amy Timms was one of those who did the virtual marathon last year and she wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

If you want to follow in her footsteps this year you can, with no registration fee and a fundraising pledge of just £100.

Amy told us: “The Virtual London Marathon was my first marathon and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it is something I am hugely proud of!

“I chose Meningitis Now as my charity because my best friend contracted meningitis when we were younger.

“She went from being her usual bubbly self to being seriously ill in a matter of hours.

Quickly made a full recovery

“Thankfully she very quickly made a full recovery, thanks to her parents’ quick actions and all of the amazing staff at both Stoke Mandeville and High Wycombe general hospitals.

“Many people though aren’t as fortunate as my beautiful friend and Meningitis Now does fantastic work to help those affected. I am proud to have done my little bit to help!”

The actual and the virtual marathons take place on Sunday 3 October. Thanks to the official app, which tracks your progress and provides exclusive event commentary, you can appreciate the atmosphere of the real thing even when you’re running round your local area.

Our Fundraising Officer Leah Wynn said: “Wherever you are, take on the challenge and raise vital funds to support those affected by meningitis. We’d love to have you as part of our #TeamTangerine.

Support you every step of the way

“We’re here to support you every step of the way and can offer you your own personalised technical running top, an invitation to join our London Marathon runners' community on Facebook, access to our Training Hub and free fundraising materials.

“If you've secured your own place in the Virtual London Marathon, we'd love you to join our team too – you'll get all of the same support as our charity place runners, but there's no minimum sponsorship pledge.”

We can accept people right up until the console closes at 4pm on Thursday 19 August.
