Actor and comedian Joel ("that comedian guy with a beard from that thing you saw", as his website has it, best known for his television roles in Skins, Live in Chelsea, Impractical Jokers and I’m a Celebrity… Get me Out of Here) was recently the subject of the latest weekly The Motto Podcast, the online interview of interesting people from the world of popular culture.
Some of the money the show generates from sponsorship is offered to the guest to donate to a charity of their choice and Joel chose us. In the interview, Joel speaks movingly about his support for our work.
“I would love to give to Meningitis Now - they’re a wonderful charity. I did some work with them this year. There was a guy who booked to see me on tour and he was a big fan of me after I did the jungle stuff but unfortunately he died before he could see me on tour - of meningitis - so I’ve really tried to get involved with the charity and they’ve been so wonderful, so I’m just trying to give back as much as I can.”
Joel was referring to George Zographou, who sadly died from meningitis last summer. Since then, George’s family have been campaigning and raising awareness of the disease that robbed George of his life, including being one of the families to meet Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to jointly work towards improvements in how the NHS diagnoses, vaccinates and informs parents about meningitis.
South Glos Show
As Joel mentioned, this is not the first time though that he has involved himself in our work. In the Summer of 2017 he joined fellow I’m a Celebrity contestant and our celebrity ambassador Lisa Snowdon at the South Glos Show, where we were the official charity.
Our stand became a celebrity hub as campmates Joel and Lisa hosted a meet and greet with fans, and took part in the one-off celebrity gameshow, ‘guess the symptoms’.
Things took a dramatic turn during the early afternoon as dark clouds rolled in and the heavens opened though. Channelling their time in the jungle, Joel and Lisa got stuck in, grabbing hold of the gazebo as the wind tried its best to sweep it away!
So, definitely an all-round good guy and thanks for your support Joel. Happy New Year to you.
