Are you tough enough for Tough Mudder?

10th February 2016

We’re challenging local individuals and groups to test their strength, stamina and determination and get muddy for a good cause

Tough Mudder blog

We have guaranteed places available at a number of Tough Mudder events across the country throughout the year for those of you willing to take it on.

Two people taking us up the challenge are 39-year-old Kelli Wilkinson from Brinscall and Tom Pridgeon, aged 35, from Chorley – both in Lancashire.

“I wanted to do this to help raise awareness after my youngest baby Kenny got bacterial meningitis at seven weeks old,” Kelli said.

“I never expected meningitis. When it’s spoken about you expect to see the rash but this can be one of the last symptoms.”

Quite a challenge

“Fortunately my boy survived and he’s now four months old. I have never done anything like this before,” Kelli added. “I’ve never been to a gym, so it’s going to be quite a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.”

As if the challenge isn’t tough enough already Tom has decided to go round the course twice. Yes, twice.

During a Tough Mudder event last September Tom was inspired to see some people who were on their second lap of the course. He wanted to do the course again but most of his team mates, although they enjoyed it once, said they wouldn’t do it again!

Going round twice

Tom decided to go solo this year but to take another step challenge he would go round twice and raise some money for charity in the process.

“I chose Meningitis Now as the charity, not only because I saw it advertised but because I recognise meningitis as a real threat. As a parent, it’s what you always worry about when your child gets sick.”

“I also have first-hand experience as my best friend caught it as a teenager. Thankfully his mum was a nurse so she spotted the symptoms quickly and he made a full recovery. I know sometimes people aren’t so lucky.”

Tom has the following advice for anyone thinking of doing Tough Mudder.

“Don’t worry too much and be prepared to enjoy it. Whether you’re in a team or on your own, you will always have someone helping you over the obstacles. Everybody helps the next man or woman over.”

Prepare for mud

“One thing you must be prepared for is mud - I know the clue is in the name but you will wade through it, crawl through it, fall into it, climb through it, swim through it …”.

Tough Mudder is an obstacle course designed to test physical strength and mental grit. Those taking part experience exhilarating but safe world-class obstacles they wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Meningitis Now participants are asked to raise £250 in sponsorship to support our work. In return you receive a running top, training and dietary tips and help with fundraising ideas and materials.

“This is your chance to support the lifesaving and life-changing work of Meningitis Now in a fun-filled environment,” said our event organiser Rachel Oakley.
