Volunteering newsletter March 2019 blog

What do you do when someone asks you specific medical questions about meningitis? We know you are great at promoting our website and the comprehensive information on it, but sometimes people might ask questions that you can't answer.

We have created a laminated poster for you to order for your events, which you can order from our Resources Order Form. This poster directs people to our nurse-led Helpline, which provides up-to-date information on vaccines and other meningitis issues.

You can also order the following:

  • Signs and symptoms cards and dispensers - ask local places to display these for you;
  • Meningitis leaflets and posters - set up an awareness stand at a local event or fayre, or even a willing local business, library or community group meeting.
A new and easy way to pay in money from collection tins

With more and more high street banks closing, paying collection tin money in isn't as easy as it used to be. Picking a tin up is only half the task; you've then got to get to a bank.

Now you can pay the tin money in online. Volunteer Anne Foster said our new online form is very straightforward and using it saved her a 30-mile round trip to her local bank!

Next time you pick up a tin, let us know if you want to pay in the money online and we'll send you an easy link.

Volunteer round-up

Gill Evans: March has been a busy month for our Warwickshire-based volunteer Gill, whose granddaughter Sophie had meningitis in 2014.

Gill has set up awareness stands a three national dance events this month, each attended by several hundred dancers and their families. An incredible effort, thanks so much Gill.

In a rush to get hundreds of water bottles out to Gill for her events, we called on Sue Jefferies and Lydia Hannah, who came into Head Office at short notice to help out. Thanks both for stepping in when we really needed help!

Angela Cloke: Our inexhaustible Community Ambassador Angela Cloke has been doing, on average, two talks a week for us, which is astonishing!

One Warwickshire WI group she visited last week thanked her for her engrossing talk, writing, "What an incredible insight you gave us to meningitis. No amount of lecturing about facts and figures could have struck such a chord as your account".

Barry Patrick represented us at a Health and Wellbeing Fair at Queens University in Belfast and made great use of a small table to make an eye-catching stand.

Nikki Dallaway, Ann Foster, Edmond Flack and Sue Davie have all give short talks to school assemblies recently. The talks support the research team studying how immunisation against MenB might affect the carriage of meningitis in teenagers.

Graeme Burridge gave a talk to around 30 builders in Schroders in Horsham during their lunch break. They asked lots of questions and were keen to take away the materials.

Cliff and Jeanette Bull helped us by running an awareness stand at a health and fitness fair at Stephenson College in Coalville.

Mary Garley visited a Senior Citizen Club in London, who were inspired to raise money for us after watching a plot line about meningitis on Call the Midwife! Mary gave a talk and collected a cheque for over £1,500.

A huge thank you to you all for your help - you have been fantastic at representing Meningitis Now and getting our all-important message out so successfully.

Collection tins

Becky Bright and Aurelie Brunet-Lua have been out and about picking up tins for us in Barnsley and Dursley. Not the most interesting task but a vital one - thank you both so much!
