Wood Leisure's big year of fundraising for Meningitis Now

Andy Hopkinson | 15th March 2022

We’d like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone at Wood Leisure Holiday Parks and their guests and suppliers for their fabulous fundraising efforts

Wood Leisure Holiday Parks fundraise for Meningitis Now

The family-run holiday park company selected us as charity of the year after experiencing first-hand how devastating meningitis can be, when owner Colin became ill with pneumococcal meningitis in February 2019.

Colin’s daughter Sarah told us: “As a very close family, this came as a huge shock to us seeing him so ill and we were devastated.

“The doctors prepared us for the worst and even when he started to show signs of improvement they prepared us for all the serious after-effects that can result from meningitis.”

Fortunately though, Colin went on to make a good recovery, and recently celebrated his 70th birthday.

Since his recovery the family - Colin, his wife Margaret and their three daughters Sarah, Kirsty and Rachel - together with visitors to their six sites across Scotland, have undertaken a series of events and challenges to raise funds towards our lifesaving and life-changing work.

Massive cheque

And recently, our Community Support Officer for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Alison Yelland, called in on Colin and Margaret at his Blairgowrie site to pick up a massive cheque for £3,000, bringing the total raised by these wonderful supporters to £7,130 since August 2019.

Among the activities they have taken part in are a long-distance walk, bake sales, a treadmill challenge, raffles at their holiday homes' owners days and other site events and offering optional donations with every booking taken.

Another initiative the generous family has set up is to offer breaks to people and families who have been affected by meningitis, as one of their ways of helping others (see photo). These holiday vouchers have also been used as raffle prizes by other families fundraising for us.

Signs and symptoms cards

Our signs and symptoms awareness cards are also on prominent display in all their parks.

Alison added: “We are always so grateful when we hear how hard our supporters are working to raise funds and awareness for us, and how committed they are to our cause to beat meningitis in the UK within a generation. We really appreciate all their effort – thank you Colin and family and we look forward to hearing what you do next.”

Wood Leisure is a family-owned holiday park group that has been welcoming visitors from the UK and beyond since 1981.
