The year you joined the charity
A brief overview of your role – what are you responsible for?
As Communications Officer, I am responsible for publicising the work of the charity. This includes working with the press – local and national newspapers and broadcasters – and researching and writing blogs for our website.
Your favourite part of your role
I love helping our supporters who are so keen to raise awareness about meningitis. It is hugely satisfying when a story goes right and gets picked up by the local and national press – and to know that every person who reads that story or listens to that interview is learning about the dangers of the disease.
Your biggest achievements
For years I have had a bucket list of two: swim with whale sharks and write a book. I have yet to achieve the first (one attempt in Mozambique was thwarted by bad weather) but a few years ago I wrote and published a book about moving overseas as an “expat partner”. It was never going to be a best seller but it definitely appealed to my niche target audience!
A fun fact about yourself
I was born in Cuba; my parents were diplomats and happened to be posted in Havana when I came along. Years later I joined the Foreign Office myself and went back to visit my birth country when I was posted to Jamaica. If nothing else, I enjoyed the mojitos!
