Ed trained at King's College and St George’s Hospital Medical School London, obtaining his medical qualifications in 1978. He had clinical training posts in internal medicine, clinical haematology and infectious diseases before commencing microbiology training in Manchester.

In 1990, he was appointed Consultant Medical Microbiologist at Public Health England, Manchester and, in 1999, was appointed Head of the National Meningococcal Reference Unit for England and Wales.

Ed is particularly interested in the diagnosis, management and epidemiology of meningococcal disease.
