Meningitis Aware Recognition Mark for Universities
Please note, due to the current pandemic we are currently unable to process MARM applications. However, you can still access all our MARM resources by registering your details below.
In the UK every university could experience at least one case of meningitis or meningococcal disease (meningitis and septicaemia) amongst its students within the first term. Cases are still occurring every year and in the winter of 2015/16 there were still high profile deaths amongst first year students (freshers)
Universities have an important role to play in the recognition, prevention and management of meningitis - knowing the signs and symptoms and getting immediate medical help will save lives.
Endorsed by the Student Health Association and Universities UK, the MARM toolkit has been developed to help universities ensure they are meeting recommendations set out in Public Health England’s ‘Guidance on the prevention and management of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia in higher education institutions’. These guidelines are inclusive for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
On completion of a checklist, each university will gain the MARM recognition mark which can be used to demonstrate that they are:
- Raising awareness of meningitis amongst students and staff
- Promoting vaccine uptake
- Planning ahead – being prepared for a case(s) of meningitis or meningococcal disease on campus
