Matthew's story

Matthew

It sounded on the phone to Jennifer as if her grandson Matthew had a nasty case of flu. But he had in fact contracted meningitis. She shares their story as part of our No Plan B for MenB campaign.

“Our 21-year-old grandson Matthew was out with his cousin and he rang us to say that Matthew was unwell and he was worried about him.

“We rang Matthew to find out what was happening. He told us he didn't feel well and he sounded like he was full of flu. We enquired as to where he was and what he was doing. He said he was on his way to pick up his coat from his girlfriend’s house.

“What we didn't know until much later is that that is where he stopped. Apparently he fell asleep there and eventually collapsed. When we rang him he said he didn't feel very well. We rang later to see how he was and he sounded like we had just woken him up. He then fell asleep on us, or so we thought.

“Our last memory of Matthew was hearing his deep breathing. The next morning he died.

“It's nearly the second anniversary of Matthew’s passing and it feels like we are losing him all over again.”
