“A great, well organised event. High standards to maintain for Beat the Tram 2026!"

Some 123 runners took part in Edinburgh’s newest running event, ‘Race the Tram’, on Sunday 22 June.

Runners boarded an Eastbound tram from Edinburgh Park Central, leaping off at either St Andrew Square or Newhaven. The aim - to beat the tram back to the start, by any route.

Amongst those racing the tram was our very own CEO, Dr Tom Nutt:

“As a runner, I was really excited to be part of such a fun and novel event, especially as it was in Edinburgh, where we have a strong supporter base. We were cheered on by supporters including those from Team Alexis Rose who helped secure the partnership. I was surprised and delighted to have actually beaten the tram too!”

Catriona Bruce, the organiser of the event with her company, Blast Running said: “The outgoing tram was buzzing with anticipation with runners sharing route ideas and nervously preparing to jump out at their chosen stop.”

Shared tales

Back at the finish line runners shared tales of missed paths, fences jumped, the risks and benefits of following others, and even a mobile phone being held aloft to share guidance from Google maps!

One participant said: “I loved how people would disappear from sight and then reappear out of a graveyard or road end. Very amusing!”

High standards

Another runner said it was, “a great, well organised event. High standards to maintain for Beat the Tram 2026! I will sign up for some orienteering lessons before next year!”

The inaugural event raised over £1,000 from runner’s donations, some of which has been match funded by event supporter D1 Developments.
