Meningitis Now CEO, Dr Tom Nutt, says:
“You may have seen recent media coverage about changes to the childhood immunisation schedule in the United States, particularly around vaccinations to prevent meningitis.
"This is a concern for us at Meningitis Now. Vaccines are one of the most important ways we can protect people of all ages from serious and life-threatening diseases.
"We are fortunate in the UK that we have the NHS to ensure that vaccines are available to everyone who needs them, and we naturally urge everyone eligible for NHS vaccinations to take advantage and protect themselves and their loved ones.
No Plan B for MenB
"In fact, we’d like to see the NHS immunisation schedule expanded to include giving the lifesaving MenB vaccination to teenagers and young adults. This is our No Plan B for MenB campaign. Until this happens, it’s important to remember that the MenB vaccination is only available privately for this age group. You can read more about the vaccines available in the UK here.
"We recognise that vaccination programmes are reviewed regularly around the world, and decisions can vary between countries depending on local evidence, healthcare systems, and public health priorities. We are not aware of any changes planned to the UK immunisation schedule, and we would emphasise that all routine vaccinations offered in the UK are recommended by medical and public health experts.
"If you have questions or concerns about vaccinations, we encourage you to speak to a healthcare professional such as your GP or health visitor, who can provide advice based on the latest UK guidance. You can find more information about how to ensure you and your family are protected against meningitis at the Meningitis Now website or by calling our nurse-led Helpline on 0808 80 10 388."
