2-year-old Isabelle contracted viral meningitis

Isabelle P case study frame

“Isabelle is extremely lucky to come out of this back to her usual self.”

Morgan’s daughter Isabelle was 2 when she became ill with headaches, seizures and a fever. After a number of tests and a hospital stay viral meningitis was diagnosed.

Thankfully several months later Isabelle is back to her usual self as Morgan, from Richmond in North Yorkshire, tells us here.

“My daughter Isabelle fell poorly on June 22nd. She wasn’t right all day, had lost her appetite and went straight to sleep on the night time without a fuss. She woke up in the middle of night complaining her head was hurting and was asleep the whole day the next day without eating and drinking little and often.

“The morning of the 24th we were getting ready to head to the doctors so she could be checked over and when I tried to wake her to get her dressed she had a seizure lasting approximately eight minutes.

Went into a seizure

“I was straight away on the phone to an ambulance and they came within five minutes and we were straight away blue lighted to the nearest hospital. In the back of the ambulance she went into an absent seizure that lasted around 20 minutes.

“We arrived at Darlington Memorial Hospital and she was straight away into children’s emergency resus where she was hooked up having antibiotics, fluids, painkillers etc because they didn’t know the cause of the problem. She was put on antibiotics just in case and they said her ear was red, so it was more than likely an ear infection and that we had to stay in overnight.

“The next day she was still sleepy and still didn’t want to eat and was only drinking when I would hold a bottle to her mouth. It was not until day two of her being in hospital that the doctor on his morning rounds tested to see if she was stiff. She was and a lumbar puncture was done, which confirmed her having viral meningitis.

Wanted to go back to bed

“Isabelle had every test under the sun done, a CT, MRI, EEG, just because they weren’t happy with how lethargic she was. It wasn’t until day seven she started sitting up and eating small bits and would sit in the playroom for 10 minutes. But she soon wanted to go back to bed.

“When we eventually went home that’s when she felt more comfortable and started eating a lot more and started walking properly again. She now has a massive fear of doctors.

“She’s happy and thriving three months later and hasn’t shown any long-term complications. They said her seizures were down to her temperature, because she had no swelling on the brain on her CT and MRI scans. She’s been prescribed Buccolam just in case which, fingers crossed. I have never had to use.

“The fear of this happening again is horrifying. No parent should ever see their children that poorly; it’s something I wouldn’t wish upon anyo
