We are aware of reports of a confirmed case of meningitis at the University of Surrey. Our thoughts are with the individual affected, their family and friends, and everyone who may be feeling worried by this news. We are offering our support and assistance to the University and students.

Dr Tom Nutt, Chief Executive of Meningitis Now, said: "We understand that news of a meningitis case can be concerning, particularly for students, families and the local community. While it is important to remain calm and follow the advice being provided by public health officials, it is also vital that everyone is aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and knows when to seek urgent medical help."

While the risk to the wider community remains low, if you're studying, living or socialising in the area, please look out for one another. Meningitis can affect anyone and symptoms can appear in any order and may not all be present.

Common symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, drowsiness, cold hands and feet, rapid breathing, and in some cases a rash that does not fade under pressure.

Find out more about the signs and symptoms to watch for here.

If you are worried about yourself or someone else, trust your instincts and seek medical help immediately.
