Our updated comment on the Canterbury outbreak

19th March 2026

Our thoughts remain firmly with everyone affected by the recent meningitis outbreak in Canterbury and across Kent. With 27 cases now confirmed, this remains a worrying and distressing time for students, families and the wider community, and we want those impacted to know that they are not alone.

Meningitis Now stands ready to support anyone affected, both now and in the days and weeks ahead. This outbreak is a stark reminder of how devastating meningitis can be, and why prevention must remain a national priority.

In the light of the Health Secretary’s statement earlier this week, we are urging the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and the Government to ensure that there is a full and transparent review of the effectiveness of the MenB vaccine for young people.

This review should be carried out rapidly and thoroughly, on behalf of every family who has experienced the impact of meningitis and for all those across the UK who are understandably concerned.

At Meningitis Now, we urge all decision-makers to act decisively, guided not only by evidence but also by compassion and the experiences of those affected. Our campaign ‘No Plan B for MenB’ calls for the MenB vaccination to be given to all those at most risk of disease, a MenB booster programme to protect teenagers and young adults by 2030 and the availability of MenB vaccination on the high street at a fair price.

We encourage everyone to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of meningitis and to seek urgent medical help if concerned. Our support services remain available for anyone who needs information, reassurance or someone to talk to during this difficult time.
