“If sharing Charlotte’s story helps even one person recognise the symptoms earlier, then this challenge has meant even more."

Huge congratulations to our supporter, Aimee, who has just completed a demanding 91-mile run along The Ridgeway, raising nearly £4,000 towards our ongoing work.

The run, along England’s oldest road, was in memory of Charlotte, who tragically died from meningitis at just 18 months old in 2007.

Aimee, from Halton in Buckinghamshire, told us: “Charlotte’s death was sudden and devastating, and this challenge was not only about fundraising but also about raising awareness of how quickly meningitis can take hold and the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms early.

Recognise the symptoms

“If sharing Charlotte’s story helps even one person recognise the symptoms earlier, then this challenge has meant even more.”

Aimee completed her ‘tough, emotional and unforgettable’ challenge, which normally takes six days, in just three. Her adventure drew strong community support, with 21 people joining in to run sections of the route and another 21 turning out to cheer along the way.

Aimee added: “It is a privilege to be able to choose to suffer from the physical and mental demands of running 91 miles as a way to reflect on the far greater and lasting pain experienced by my husband Nick, Charlotte’s dad, our family and everyone who knew her.

Grateful for support

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who donated, shared or supported my efforts in any way,” the runner added. “It all made a huge difference. And it is great to be part of this community. We gain great comfort meeting others who have suffered and lost from this cruel disease.”

Special thanks were also given to family and friends, including Aimee’s parents, who acted as a dedicated support crew throughout the three days.

Katherine Hollywell, our Fundraising Officer, said: “What an amazing challenge Aimee has taken on in Charlotte’s memory. Her efforts will help our ongoing work fighting back against meningitis, support those who have been affected by it and enable us to be here for everyone who needs us. Thank you for all you are doing.”
