Sahara Trek 2026

5th May 2026

Our first overseas trip in 10 years was not only a fundraising success but a life-changing experience for participants

Large group of people, many wearing sunglasses and t-shirts look at the camera, some with arms above their heads

29 people took on our Sahara Trek 2026. They traced the sun-drenched dunes and ancient riverbeds of one of the largest and most beautiful deserts in the world.

All of the participants carried not only their rucksacks but also their experiences of meningitis. The process of walking together brought many emotions and stories to the fore.

There were profound as well as hilarious moments with the resident caravan of camels, a game of football with local children, quiet contemplation witnessing the awesome surroundings, including sunsets and rises, shared meals under canvas, and nights spent observing and sleeping under the incredible desert skies.

Inspirational group of people

Our President, Lisa Snowdon, who has been involved with the charity since her viral meningitis diagnosis in 2010, was a key member of the trek. She said the trek was “An experience I’ll never forget with the most incredible, inspirational group of people – all walking with purpose, remembering those who are no longer with us, and for some us, remembering times we were poorly.

Thank you Meningitis Now for bringing us together as a family. One we didn’t choose to be part of, but one we are part of now and with that comes love, support, kindness, sharing our stories, and holding each other close.”

The trekkers raised an incredible £87,000 for Meningitis Now, which will make a huge difference to our work.

Family feeling

Many on the trek spoke about the family feeling, memories made and the support of the Meningitis Now crew:

“The whole team have been amazing and I could have asked for better support. I wish I had known about the Meningitis Now family earlier.”

“It was a truly unforgettable, life-changing experience that created so many special memories and stories.”

“It was so amazingly run and I loved every single second! Hopefully will be able to go on many more.”

Long time supporter Paul Gentry said: “Completing the Sahara trek for Meningitis Now was an amazing achievement for Helen and me, but what we’ll remember most is the incredible people we met — each with their own story and reason for being there.”

Lisa Ellis, our Supporter Care Administrator, said: "What an experience! Such a memorable trek that will stay with us all forever. Breathtaking scenery shared amongst wonderful people all sharing stories and bonding as one family. I felt privileged to have been walking alongside each and every one of you."

Awe-inspiring

Our CEO, Dr Tom Nutt, also took part in the trek. He says:

“The trip to the Sahara exceeded all expectations. It was moving, awe-inspiring, and fun. We laughed, we cried, and we supported one another too. You couldn’t ask for a better expression of ‘the Meningitis Now family’ or why the work of the charity makes a difference”

Thank you for all of the trekkers who took part, as well as everyone who supported them. Find out more about our future challenges and events here.
