Erin's story

26th September 2018

Erin had always been a calm baby from the moment she was born, so Gwynedd-based mum Charlotte Williams knew there was something wrong when she became very unsettled one day in July 2017

“My daughter has always been a calm and contented baby, from the moment she was born. She was six weeks old when she became poorly. During the day she was gradually becoming grumpier and unsettled, every time I would pick her up or touch her she would cry."

“By 11pm her temperature was sky high and there were no appointments available from the out of hours service, so I trusted my gut and took her to A&E having been told there was a six hour wait to be seen as it was a Sunday night."

Care was amazing

“The care we received from the moment we walked in was amazing! Erin had a lumbar puncture, was given precautionary antibiotics and then finally a diagnosis of meningitis within a very short space of time. This all happened in the early hours of a Monday morning. We were in hospital for a week and then allowed home and to continue treatment as a day patient for another week."

“The rash that most people wait for never appeared on Erin and, as it is one of the last symptoms to appear, if we had waited our story may have been very different. Our family are eternally grateful to the NHS that our daughter / little sister is now a cheeky, happy and healthy 15-month-old with hardly any after-effects. We are very lucky!”
