- Believe and Achieve Mentor

Peer Mentor

Hello, I'm Katy. Back in December 2013 we lost my brother's girlfriend Sarah to meningitis, aged just 19.

Before we lost Sarah, I had no idea what meningitis was, or the signs and symptoms to look out for.

Since April 2014 I have held annual fundraising events to raise money for Meningitis Now - from a skydive, to a 100k trek, charity ball and many more events. I also hold stalls at freshers fairs and present talks at local schools. I aim to change the perceptions of meningitis, as many believe it is only babies who can be affected.

I became a peer mentor so that I can help support others through a similar journey to myself. It's important to feel as if you can discuss your concerns with somebody who understands both the mental and physical pain meningitis can cause. I like to think that I can help change somebody's perspective and show them that there is a life after meningitis.

I currently work as a Marketing Executive for a private hospital. I am a huge dog lover and in the long term would love to work in animal assisted therapy. Fundraising and volunteering for Meningitis Now is a huge and very important part of my life and I'm excited to embark on my peer mentor journey.
