World Meningitis Day is just around the corner (Monday 5 October) and one person with the perfect recipe for marking the day and making it special is our supporter Amin Mekacher.
Amin, who works for Ofcom on online safety, will be hosting his first fundraiser for Meningitis Now – a bake sale at his office in central London.
He’s been busy baking up some 200 tasty offerings for colleagues including donuts, cookies and muffins.
Amin told us: “I love using my Bundt cake pan, so I'm always looking for excuses to use it. I recently baked a marble cake with it, which was a success, so I will probably start using this recipe frequently.”
Provide support
The serious points is that Amin, who contracted pneumococcal meningitis when he was 9-years-old, wants to raise funds for our ongoing work through donations from colleagues. He’s hoping for £600 but feels that may be overly ambitious. If anyone would like to help him reach his target they can donate on his fundraising page here.
“I always wanted to contribute at my own level to help provide support for other people who live with long-term complications from meningitis, but it's challenging to have a meaningful impact at a local level,” he added.
“However, in the last few years I've become increasingly more confident in my baking skills and the stars truly aligned when I learned that Meningitis Now offers help to organise a bake sale. I quickly grabbed that opportunity when I could.
Answer questions and provide information
“I will also be available to answer questions related to meningitis, and provide information flyers for anyone who would like to learn more about the initiatives carried out by Meningitis Now.
“I was hospitalised for pneumococcal meningitis when I was 9-years-old. It had quite a significant impact on my life, as I suffered brain lesions that left me with muscular weakness and nerve damage. I also became deaf on one side, so it was a long journey for me to learn to regain confidence in myself after my hospitalisation.
“I'm nervous and very excited at the same time about my first fundraiser, but I’ve had a lot of support from my colleagues, which I found very heartwarming and encouraging to go forward with the bake sale.”
Thank you Amin for your support and we know your cakes will be snapped up by your lucky colleagues.
