Christine F's story

17th December 2018

Fifty-one year old single mum Christine, from Ormskirk in Lancashire, became ill with meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia shortly after celebrating the new Millennium in 2000

Christine F's story

She’s now keen to share her story to help spread awareness for our Adults Get It Too campaign.

“I went to bed on the Monday after the Millennium feeling like I had the flu."

“My daughter found me unconscious in bed on the Tuesday morning and she rang for an ambulance. At the hospital they saw the rash and diagnosed meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia."

“I was in intensive care and unconscious for 10 days, before being moved around to different wards as they didn't know what to do with me."

Unable to see or walk

“I left after a month, unable to see properly or walk unaided."

“It was the most frightening thing as I lost 11 days of my life, including my birthday. It was 12 months before I was able to return to work and as a single parent things became very hard, but I survived."

“Today I have no feeling in two fingers on each hand and the bottoms of both of my feet are dead. My short-term memory is also very bad, but at least I’m alive!"

“Meningitis Now has supported me through counselling to help deal with the impact the disease has had on my life.”
