Elizabeth H’s story

2nd September 2025

If vaccines had been available the story might be different

Elizabeth case study frame

“Perhaps she would have been married with children, my grandsons would have had an aunt and cousins and my other daughter the sister she lost.”

Rita’s daughter Elizabeth was in her first year at university when she fell ill. The family rushed to her bedside in hospital but three days later, on her 20th birthday, Elizabeth sadly died.

Although this was over 30 years ago the family still grieve for her and the life she lost out on, as Rita, from Brentwood in Essex, tells us here.

“Elizabeth was 19 and in her first term at university in 1991. She became very ill with meningitis and was taken to hospital where she was unconscious. The family were contacted by the hospital and we travelled to Manchester from Essex. She died three days later on her 20th birthday.

Sorely missed

“She is still sorely missed 30 plus years later. There was no vaccine then. If she had been able to have one then perhaps she would have been married with children, my grandsons would have had an aunt and cousins and my other daughter the sister she lost.

“We all still grieve for her.

“Meningitis Now has helped us though their Helpline, home visits, volunteering and fundraising. Their support has been tremendous.”
